About Us
We support children to achieve their personal best.
Vera Lacaze Memorial Kindergarten is a not-for-profit organisation run by a committee of community volunteers. We are affiliated with Lady Gowrie Qld and have been established in Toowoomba for over 55 years.
Welcoming children between 3-5 years of age.
Children receive an average of 15 hours of kindergarten education per week for 40 weeks. Throughout the program we develop a positive disposition towards learning within children. We aim to develop attributes of life-long and self-motivated learners who are developed in all realms, including emotional, social, physical, intellectual.
High-quality play-based learning.
Our staff provide a high-quality play-based learning program using the Early Years Learning Framework & Queensland Kindergarten Curriculum guidelines. We provide a tailored approach through our individualised learning framework for each child. We use communication, reflection, observation and collaboration with child, parents and educators within the centre to provide a wholistic approach.
Our History
We're named after Vera Lacaze
Vera Lacaze along with her husband moved to Toowoomba from Gympie in 1927. Dr Lacaze was a Dentist in the area and Vera had been a Nurse at the Royal Brisbane Hospital prior to their marriage in 1924.
Both Vera and her husband were prominent in charity work, working for the ‘little people’. She became a founding member of the local Repertory Theatre in 1932 and the Tick Tock Players Theatrical Group, which organised a 3 act play to raise money for the Ambulance Brigade. Vera helped run this play from Boxing Day until New Year’s night every year for 23 years (1938-1961) raising $50,000 for the Brigade and replacing 14 Ambulances. A remarkable achievement.
Vera expressed her enthusiasm and support of a Kindergarten
following the formation of the Toowoomba Kindergarten Association in March 1962.
After her death in April, that year, the Association decided to call the Kindergarten the Vera Lacaze Memorial Kindergarten, a fitting tribute in her memory.
